Da-da da-da-da da Dora!

617~Dora-The-Explorer-Posters.jpg

Dora
Adia
The funniest thing about this picture is that she isn't trying to look like Dora. That's the way she always waves, with her arm straight above her head. It's so cute, you can never be in a bad mood when Adia waves at you:)
I wanted Adia to get a short and easy summer hair cut. She asked for it to look just like Dora's. You know Dora,... THE Explorer. (In case you DON'T know Dora, she is a little cartoon girl who runs around speaking Spanish and having adventures.) Those of you who know me know that Dora isn't my favorite person. It's not that I don't like her. She's great, really. But there are two things that I have an issue with. One, her belly shows, and two - her hair. It drives me NUTS! I tried to explain that to her. She didn't care. I tried to convince her of a different cut. She insisted on Dora. She told us exactly how she wanted it. We cut it just like Dora's. (Not really! THANK YOU SO MUCH AUNT BOBBI!) It looks really cute.

*Now I have a slightly racially inappropriate story to share about her hair cut. If you don't want to hear it, stop reading now, consider the first paragraph to be the end of the post, and just admire the darling hair cut. If you keep reading, consider yourself warned. I don't want any mean comments -got it?

As Bobbi was cutting her hair we were trying to thing of reasons that we couldn't cut it like Dora's. We were about out of reasons when Bobbi said "it's not going to look exactly like Dora's because she has more hair than you." Adia asked why Dora had more hair. Bobbi answered "because she's Mexican, and Mexican people have a lot of hair." That got us started on a conversation about how Adia's birth parents are both part hispanic, and so Adia is too. She decided that since she has blue eyes and her *Real* parents aren't hispanic that she wasn't either and so her hair really wouldn't look exactly like Dora's (Yay!) When the cut was finished, looking similar, but not exactly like Dora's, we swept the hair into a pile. Her hair had been pretty long before the cut, so there was quite a pile. Adia looked down and said, "Holy Crap! I guess I AM a Mexican!"

"Mom, guess what I am"
"A Muslim?"
"Nope"
"Mary, the mother of Jesus?"
"Nope"
"Anyone from the scriptures?"
"NO!"
"A Beet?"
"No, guess better!"
"Someone who forgot how to put their shirt on?"
"No, watch this..."
"NOW guess!"
"A SCUBA diver?"
"Nope."
"An Octopus?"
"Nope."
"A helicopter?"
"No, MO-OM Just guess right."
"Why don't you tell me?"
"Just keep trying, you will never learn anything if I give you all the answers all the time." (I kinda deserved that)
"A pile of spaghetti with sauce on the top?"
"Oh, Mom, you aren't even trying now."
"Okay, just tell me what you are."
"A red rabbit, silly!"
"Oh, of course! How didn't I know that? You look EXACTLY like a red rabbit. It's totally obvious..."

Tea Party

Adia misses her friends. A LOT. We used to live on a circle street, and almost every house on our side of the circle had kids or grand kids living there that were my kid's age. They used to run back and forth between each other's houses, and they had a blast every single day. Now we live in the country where playing with friends takes some planning and patience from the moms. Adia misses the ease of city life. (So do I, but for different reasons:) So we decided to have a tea party and invite all the little girls that we could find. We had a blast. We made fun little invitations (I forgot to take a picture of those-oops) made treats, decorated, and dressed up. It was so much fun, and the girl's conversations were so funny. They were like little tiny grown ups. I was dieing. Here are some of the pictures of the festivities. (Moms, if you want copies, let me know:)
We had delightfully pink cupcakes with purple and white frosting and pink sprinkles. (Adia's choice of course)

I made little flower shaped drawstring purses for a take-home for each girl. My friend Stacy brought the darling little butterfly clips for each girl.

Miss Payton - This also doubled as a birthday celebration for her as well.

Lucy - Isn't she stunning?

Kaymee- Ethan fell in love with her after the party was over. He talks about how pretty, and nice she is all the time. (I'm not sure she even remembers who he is. Love can be hard when you're young:)

This is the goofiest picture of Adia, but for some reason it's the only close up I got of her.

Braylee- She is so sweet, she makes me giggle. - And she loved the cupcakes, can you tell?

Shaydin, a baby sister tagged along. She was darling. She was REALLY enjoying the frosting.

We did a couple of little crafts after the treat portion.
All of the moms stayed around to help and visit. Thanks so much for your company ladies.

Everybody smiling.

I said, "look like a princess", and this is what I got...

What really matters.

Today Ethan had a Doctor's appointment. He has a hard time with things that are out of routine, and especially things where he feels like he is being observed, so I always try to talk him through it before we go. We were talking about what was going to happen and I asked "what do we do when we go to the doctor's office?" I was thinking along the lines of You listen, you do what he asks, you don't hit him when he is testing your reflexes, you don't yell "BAD TOUCH!!!" when he lifts your shirt to listen to your lungs, you don't run away and hide until mom gets hysterical and they have to call hospital security. You know, all that normal doctor visit stuff:)
Ethan thought about this for a while. He really wanted to get the right answer. He knew it was important and he would get tested on it all the way to the doctor's office if he didn't get it over with right then. Finally his face lit up. He knew the answer, and he was excited about it. He smiled and said "You wash your face, brush your teeth, and put on clean underpants." It's true, I make him do that every time we go to the doctor. Good job dude! Way to get the priorities right!

New life, new blog, same old craziness.

So, a lot of things have changed for us in just a short amount of time. It's been a wild ride, and promises to continue in the same fashion for a while. This blog is going to be a little bit different than our old blog. It will still have the same crazy adventures, and stories of all of us trying to grow up, but it is also a place for me to heal a little, so there will be some thoughtful posts too. In this I would love feedback and any thoughts you might have on the subject too, whether your opinions agree with mine of not.(I like a little debate now and then:) Just remember this is my blog and my pain, and my healing process. I am giving you access to it, but I also reserve the right to delete mean comments:) Keep it clean and kind people:)
A lot of people were caught off guard at the sudden announcement that Troy and I were getting a divorce. I will tell you no one was more shocked than myself. I won't go into the reasons behind that decision. I will only say that poor decisions were made, our lives were changed beyond fixing, and in the end it was the only decision that would work for us. I realize that it isn't the option for everyone, and many of you probably have opinions one way or the other. Just know that because of the way things worked out, the smooth transition that was made, the fact that the divorce was final in less than two weeks as apposed to the normal 90 days, and the feeling of peace that I and my kids have had through the entire thing we know it was the right thing for us. Not the easy thing, no, but the right thing.
I have learned a lot through this process. Some of it might help you, most of it won't, but "it's my blog and I'll write if I want to..."
1.I learned that I am stronger than I think I am. (Ha, ha, on a side note I have to tell you that originally I mistakingly wrote "stranger" not "stronger" I didn't catch it until I was just about to post it. Both are true, of course, but the point that we are discussing today is strength:)
2. I learned that lives can change in a matter of moments, so cherish the life you have now.
3. I learned what the inside of a psych ward looks like.
4. I learned that I never want to be a patient in a psych ward.
5. I learned that even though a person might be in a position of power it doesn't make them right all the time.
6. I learned to trust my own instincts and not doubt the advice I give myself.(Except when it comes to dating-see #8:)
7. I learned that sometimes weird dreams are actually Gods way of preparing you for a situation you will soon be in.
8. I learned that an easy place to find a date is the mandatory (for parents in Utah) divorce education and orientation class. *note, I didn't say it was a GOOD place, I said it was an EASY place. I think it might actually be one of the WORST places to look, but if you just want a good time, that's the place to find it.
a. I learned that if you are at the divorce education and orientation class and someone of the opposite sex who is in a similar situation as you are (read: has children with special needs, and is worried about how they will handle the situation) asks for your number so that you can "talk about your children's behaviors and how best to help them", they aren't always asking because they really want to "talk about your children". So DON'T give them your number, agree to meet them in person, or get in a position where you have to dodge a kiss unless you actually want to be on a date.
b. I learned that I am not smart enough to be in the dating world yet:)
9. I learned that when I feel really alone, I am never really alone. I have God who loves me, and friends who are willing to drive for 5 hours just to give me a hug if I really need it, or who drive by my house at all hours of the day and night to make sure that "everything looks safe" or who cry with me (or for me if I can't yet cry myself), or who remind me of the things that I already knew but forgot, or who put aside their own pain and sorrow in order to come and comfort me.
10. I learned to never give someone a self-help book if
a. You have never read it yourself
b. You have never been in the situation yourself, or
c. It is entitled something cheesy like "learning to smile again"
11. I learned that the saying "sticks and stones may break your bones, but names can never hurt you" is a crock of you-know-what. Names do hurt. Judgements hurt. Ignorance hurts. But when faced with that you have a few choices. You can let it keep hurting, you can hurt back, or you can dry your tears, break out the bandaids and keep living.
12. I learned to be more aware of the power of words. They have the ability to tear down or build up depending on how you use them.
13. I learned that gossip can't break me. The people who matter already know the truth, or aren't afraid to ask and find out.
14. I learned that every negative has a positive, you just have to search a little to find it sometimes.
15. I learned that some days you" just gotta dance."
16. I learned that my kids are awesome. They are strong and brave, and truly hilarious!
17. I learned that you can't control other people's choices and life isn't always fair, but when your life gets re-arranged by someone else you can build a whole new life that's different, but just as good as the old one.
18. I learned that the person who SAYS the most isn't necessarily the one who TALKS the most.
19. I learned that mostly yelling doesn't make you right, it just makes you wrong at the top of your voice.
20. I learned that it's alright to laugh when you get in a hard situation. In fact, it's encouraged.
21. I learned that agency isn't free. Exercising agency sometimes costs a lot.
22. I learned that through the atonement Christ suffered for us. He felt our every pain. That doesn't just mean the pain we suffer because of our sins, but every pain we experience. It's alright to feel that pain, and work through it, but in the end, he has already suffered it, so it's also alright to let go of it.
23. I not only learned, but now TRUST that there is a plan for everything.
24. I learned that often Heavenly Father sends you just the right person to say or do just the right thing at just the right moment.
25. I learned that a true friend can be found in the strangest places.
26. I learned that sometimes when bad things happen it's because you are super lucky, and you are being saved from something worse.
27. The mentos and coke theory actually works.
28. It doesn't matter what life has handed you, if you want it enough to work at it, you can make all of your dreams come true.
Anyway, those are just a few of the thoughts I had rolling around in here. I hope they made sense. If not come back again in a few days, and things won't be quite so serious.

Life.

Cute right? She is a Sun-Starlet. That was my project last Saturday. More to come soon I hope.

Well, I know I have not been a good blogger lately, but trust me, I have good reasons. I won't go into them right now, but I do have a little bit of news to share. Troy and I got a divorce (final as of last Thursday - for all of my Facebook friends that was the day of the "status change fiasco":) and the kids and I are moving far away on Saturday! Are you a little surprised? I was too. There, that's the news. Now we can lay all the rumors to rest. Feel better now?:) So do I.
Moving on, Another thing you should know is that I need to know who is reading my personal stuff right now, so I will be going private soon. I haven't figured out the details right now, whether I will be only private or if I will keep this blog public and only share a little of the news and then have another private one that will contain the personal goings on of our life or what. I'm open to suggestion. But here's where you come in. LISTEN CAREFULLY! If you read my blog and want to continue leave me a comment or send me an e-mail (eberling2@msn.com) and let me know what YOUR email address is. I know that a lot of you just silently follow me, and don't feel like we are necessarily good friends, but this includes you too. Anyone can request to be on the list. I love sharing my life with everyone, and have met so many friends through the blog and I never really wanted to go private. Unfortunately situations change, and it is necessary for right now. So send me those addresses people. Things will get fun again soon, I promise. We are embarking on a whole new adventure here people, and I know you want a front seat to the train wreck that is my life:)
*Please know that going private has nothing to do with the above-mentioned news. That means that EVERYONE is welcome to request an invite, just in case you were wondering. -You know who you are:)

Birthmother's Day!

Isn't this picture goofy? We took it ourselves, and we kept chopping Adia's head off. We finally got one with most of her in it, but she looks a little possessed and by this time Ethan was so over smiling. But it's the best one we have of the three of us, I'm usually the one BEHIND the camera:) But the point is, that without our birthmother, and birthgrandma we wouldn't have this goofy picture to share. Thanks Skylar and Laura!

Do you know what day it is? It's Birth-Mother's Day! How fitting that it comes the day before mother's day. I love that. It is one of the most important holidays of the year for me. Last year I posted THIS on my blog. I think that the point was missed by a lot of the people who read it, so this year there will be no explaining or stories, just a great big THANK YOU. THANK YOU so much to our birth mother -and birth grandmother who gave me the greatest gift I could have ever asked for. THANK YOU to all of the women in this world who make the hard choice, who think more of their baby than they do of themselves. Who give a part of their heart to completely and totally change the life of someone they hardly know. THANK YOU for your strength. THANK YOU for your sacrifice. THANK YOU for understanding and believing in miracles. These words can never actually express how loved you truly are. I honor you today.

If you have a birth mother in your life thank her today. If you don't, pray for them today anyway.
Have a wonderful Birth Mother's Day!

The Perfect Idea for Mothers

I have a friend, Shanna who I "met" a couple of years ago in an adoptive parent online group we are both a part of. We became fast friends, and I just adore her. Our personalities are pretty similar, which is probably why we hit it off originally, but the reason we are still friends is because I need her. She makes me want to be the kind of person she is. Here are a few of the things I love the most about her (And wish I was:) She cracks me up. I love her sense of humor, and I totally "get" her. She is a go-getter. She isn't afraid to speak her mind. She is fearless, and gets the job done, no matter how hard. She is totally crafty. She is the best mom EVER. She does so many fun things with her kids that it amazes me. She doesn't sweat the small stuff. She is down to earth, she takes time out for the things that matter the most, like playing with her kids even if she has a million other things she could be doing. She is always trying to better herself. She makes goals and holds herself accountable for them. She is kind and full of the spirit, and inspires me to do what's right. She isn't afraid to share her feelings, no matter how personal, and that helps a lot of people learn and heal and grow. I hope to be like her when I grow up:) I just wish we didn't live a couple of THOUSAND miles away from each other... but then I might totally stalk her, so maybe it's a good thing:) Anyway, my point behind all of this is that she makes me want to be a better person, particularly a better mom. Last year right before mother's day she posted THIS on her blog. It was a total "a-ha" moment for me. I have thought about it all year, and have tried to incorporate it into my every day life, but I thought that for Mother's Day it might be a good reminder to all of us, so I decided to share. (I hope that's alright Shanna - I didn't ask first-oops:) The way she puts it is so beautiful - you are totally going to fall in love with her, and follow her blog too, she's like this all the time- amazing, I know. So head on over and read about this fantastic Mother's Day Idea!

Mixing Words

Today at lunch we were had a conversation that made me giggle. We were talking about something that doesn't really matter, and I told Ethan, "you're the odd man out." They didn't know what that meant, but as usually happens with a new word, after I explained it they tried using it as many times as possible throughout the course of the meal. Finally Adia couldn't think of anything else that made someone the "odd man out" so she suddenly shouted out "Hey, if Dad was in that situation he would be the OLD man out!" and then she burst into giggles. I had to chuckle too. Things quieted down after that and I could tell that they were each thinking hard. Finally Adia said "Mom, is that why you make that funny, colored chicken for Dad? Because he's old?"
"What chicken?" I wasn't sure what she was talking about, and serving him funny colored chicken makes it sound like I might be trying to cash in on the life insurance...
"You, know, the kind you always make on Valentine's Day, Chicken -Old, and Blue. Is it called old because you make it for Daddy?"
It dons on me then "Chicken Cordon Bleu" (If she thinks its called that it says a lot about my cooking, don't you think?) (and furthermore, if she thinks anything "old" is directly tied to Troy it says a little about him too, hee, hee.:) I can't wait to tell him this story, he's gonna love it. For now, it just makes me giggle to think of how their little minds work.
