This is for you Grandpa Jim-three posts in one day- enjoy!
So, when Troy was put in the Elders Quorum we pretty much knew it would mean he would have to help people move a lot. We have a trailer park, and an apartment complex in our ward, (though hopefully not for long) and it is on the edge of town, so there is a lot of building going on, so it comes with the territory. A new apartment complex was just built in our ward boundaries, and several new people are moving into those, but also several are moving out of the old complex into the new one. Plus, there are two houses on our street that just sold, so that has meant moving the previous owners out, and the new owners in. Really, poor Troy has been moving someone about three times a week for the last month. (He is going to wish he still lived in Wyoming) Also, he has been asking people to help so much that when he calls around people screen their phone calls and won't answer if they see his number. Even his counselors won't.:) So Thursday was his birthday, and also Stake temple day, and there was a special Priesthood session that the Stake Presidency asked he make it to. That's what we planned to do for his birthday, go to the temple, then out to dinner. But... someone needed help moving that night. After talking to the Stake, and Bishopric it was decided that these people should be the responsibility of the High Priests, so Troy should go to the temple. When we got home we had four phone messages and three people who came over to our house, yelling at Troy for not helping these people move. Well, Troy had taken about all he could, and got really angry, and yelled and stewed about it for a few hours. (He wasn't going to yell at actual people, so I was the one who had to listen) and finally decided that the EQ is not a moving company, and the next time someone called to be moved he was going to tell them that. So yesterday, the first counselor, second counselor, and Bishop all called the house to tell us of a family three houses down from us who were moving in Saturday (today). Troy might think that it's okay to say no, but he wasn't home, and I am not about to tell any of those people no when they ask something, so I said I would share the message. And guess where Troy is as we speak... You got it, three houses down, moving in our new neighbors! Way to stand your ground Honey!
We so understand what you are saying about helping ward members out! We don't have the issues of so many people moving in or out... well, we do... they just do in the middle of night! I will tell you that whenever there is service needs in our ward, my husband is usually the only member of EQ who is there. It is getting better, but one day we will have to tell you the story about watering the trees on the church farm. How do we wish that Troy was our EQ President! I guess we just need to move into your ward! :)
ReplyDeleteYou know, the EQ isn't a moving company, but also, Troy isn't the entire EQ. Just because he's the president, it's not completely his job. If people chew him out for something, that's their problem.
ReplyDeleteAlso. Look on the bright side. At least you have an EQ. We only have High Priests in our branch. The only two elders are Rob and the Branch President. (The entire branch presidency.) It might be a blessing for them to have to do more moving.
Anyway, one of my new favorite quotes is by Miguel Ruiz. "Don't take anything personally." When someone feels something, and you know you're doing the best you can already, it's not your problem. You can't change the way their going to feel. They aren't always right, and it's their problem to control their feelings, not yours.
I SO hear you on this one. We had a huge problem with this in a ward we were in a long time ago. They finally decided that if it was a new move-in, then the EQ presidency would find help, but if it was someone in the ward moving out, they needed to call members of the ward that they knew and ask for help themselves.
ReplyDeleteLOL. I am so sorry to laugh! I hate moments like these when we feel our callings get pushed to such boundaries and it is difficult to set the WHOLE WARD straight. We moved to a brand new neighborhood of 1000 homes and daily, weekly and monthly people were constantly moving in. It was nice to see new faces, however are husbandS were called to go help often. I know it can get old when it can takes hours to UNload some of those moving trucks and after your husband just walked in after a fulls days work excited to see his family and ended up moving all night! I always missed his so much too, because I looked forward to him coming home.
